Apple NYC Meatpacking store due to open next week? →
Filed under: Retail Oooh, the anticipation: New York’s third Apple retail store now appears set to open on December 7, just in time for the shopping season (well, midway through Hannukah, but I forgive!). Backing up recent reports at ifoapplestore.com, reader David sent us a picture of the store construction wrap that leaves little doubt. Will you be at the 14th Street store opening?...

If you’re a Mac-based web developer, a sysadmin at SomeBigCo, or an Outlook Web Access user, you might find yourself needing to use MS Internet Explorer from time to time. No, not IE for Mac OS X, frozen in amber within Applications folders around the globe; I mean IE for Windows, the hairy scary Active-X enabled browser that for better or worse represents a huge chunk of the web-surfing...

Don't want Google search but still want Gadgets?... →
Filed under: Internet Tools I’ll admit that I was a fan of Google Desktop at first, what with the rapid browser previews of searched email and the ability to crunch through web histories and past searches. Over time, unfortunately, GD’s reindexing began to feel a mite sluggish, and I eventually regretfully uninstalled it in the interest of better performance. Now, with the...

Zero-day exploit in QuickTime could hit Win iTunes... →
Filed under: Security Over the weekend, security researchers announced a vulnerability in QuickTime’s handling of the RTSP streaming protocol, and Windows-only exploit code is already circulating. The flaw allows attackers to craft specially formatted RTSP responses that cause a buffer overflow, and as a result they can execute arbitrary code in the context of the logged-in user....

Leopard dashboard clock takes sweet time changing... →
Filed under: Odds and ends, Leopard Here’s a subtle treat in the Leopard Dashboard: the Clock widget, never really the source of much excitement (“Oooh, look — it’s 4 am in Tangiers!”) now does a little dance, makes a little love, and gets down tonight when you change time zones. As in the movie above, you can watch the hands whirl about to the new time; the clock...

What words do your kids use for nursing?
Sad to say, in the US many children have ceased to breastfeed long before they can use words to communicate, so it seems like we have limited information on what children say when they mean “want to nurse.” In our family (with two daughters nursed to age 3) we have the anecdotal experience of the girls, four years apart and the younger not directly exposed to the elder’s toddler...

Filed under: Software The release build of Parallels Desktop 3 still isn’t quite Leopard-happy, but that’s not cause for abject despair: the second beta since 10.5 came out was released on Saturday, with enhanced support for Leopard, improved migration tools for Boot Camp partitions into Parallels disk images, and more. iPhone ads c'est bon, non? French spots now online →
Filed under: iPhone Reader Guglielmo sent word that the first four French iPhone ads hit the airwaves today (also viewable at apple.com/fr in a wide selection of resolutions). Some days you let them sleep
#2 fell asleep on the way home from the movie, then woke up again at bedtime, was up until 12:30 am. So I let her sleep in this morning, and we’ll be 20 min late for preschool. On a rainy Monday after a four day weekend, cheeriness trumps promptness — and I was not prepared for the getting-dressed screaming that would have accompanied Kid Cranky.

Palette lunchware app customizes Leopard dock →
Filed under: Software, Leopard In honor of the holiday weekend, when many of us overate ourselves into food comas, I’m coining a word to describe a class of shareware apps: “lunchware,” those programs inexpensive enough that you could buy them for what you might otherwise spend on lunch.
